Selecting a School That’s Right for Your Child

Selecting a school is one of the most important decisions a parent will make, yet myth and misperception often cloud our conversations about schools. Do test scores adequately measure academic rigor? What about enrichment programs, diversity, and school culture? Of course you want your child’s school to offer a strong academic program, but that isn’t the only factor influencing your decision, nor should it be. This popular program is presented by Educational Policy Specialist Dr. Mikala Rahn, President of Public Works Inc., a Pasadena-based non-profit organization that provides independent program evaluations of schools throughout the state. Parents of current PUSD students will also be on hand to share their perspectives and answer your questions.

Navigating Open Enrollment in PUSD

Families in any grade level in Pasadena, Altadena and Sierra Madre may apply for admission to PUSD schools other than their assigned neighborhood school through the Open Enrollment process. Students are accepted based on availability and a random lottery process. Dr. Meg Abrahamson, Pasadena Unified’s Director of Student Support Programs, along with PEN representatives, explain the process and the timelines. A question and answer session will follow.

Getting Ready for Kindergarten

Is my child ready for Kindergarten? More importantly, am I? A panel of parents and kindergarten teachers discuss their experiences with PUSD schools and teachers. We’ll discuss how to ease the transition from pre-school, what to expect from your child and yourself, volunteer opportunities, and ways to communicate with your child’s teacher. Parents can also sign up for “Parent Participation 101,” “Kinder-readiness & Curriculum,” and "What if my child has special needs?" discussion groups.
